Saul Bass designed Matchbooks

I love these matchbooks found at a flea market by the very lucky Mary & Matt. They were designed for US food company Hunt-Wessen by the wonderful Saul Bass Associates, who also created their company logo in 1964...

I saw the full set of matchbooks for the first time at the Design Museum's Saul Bass exhibition in 2004 and remember thinking how great it would be to find some at a carboot sale. It just goes to show it can happen!

Absolutely wonderful. It's almost enough to make me take up smoking! I also went to the Design Museum Bass exhibition, but don't recall these. Nice find.

I'm still frustrated at the lack of decent Bass-related resources. A comprehensive book would be a fantastic thing to have.

Hi Dean, thanks for stopping by.I totally agree about the lack of Saul Bass resources.

At the DM Exhibition we got a flyer to sign up for the first copies of the Saul Bass retrospective book due for release later that year! That was 5 years ago and still nothing. The Design Museum did have a small soft back, Saul Bass book earlier this year from a Japanese publisher with a fair few pics in it, but I'm holding out for the official one.
